What is Mardi Gras?

Mardi Gras refers to events of the Carnival celebration, beginning on or after the Christian feasts of the Epiphany (Three Kings Day) and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday, which is known as Shrove Tuesday.

Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday", reflecting the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the ritual Lenten sacrifices and fasting of the Lenten season.

Of the basic elements of this event is the sociable soul of Mardi Gras that comes from wanting to have fun with each other!

When did it start ?

Mardi Gras began in the 17th century as a farewell party for Lent. Back then, people wore exotic costumes and masquerading while attending balls and making offerings to Kings to ask their Lent blessing.

Although the origins of this celebration can be traced back to ancient Egypt, today Mardi Gras is celebrated all over the world!

Most cities have their own specific style of celebrating this festive event, with colorful costumes, upbeat music and wagons passing through the crowds!

How is it celebrated today?

The mix of cultures and beliefs is reflected in the Mardi Gras festivities, which include merry parades, food festivals, traditional dances and lots of fun.

The main symbols of this celebration are the well-known triple wagons: the three main colors (purple, green and gold) represent faith, hope and prosperity.

During the parades, the crowds join in to the dizzying jazz music of Dixieland and carnival marches.
