Burning Man Project’s mission is to produce the annual event known as Burning Man and to guide, nurture and protect the more permanent community created by its culture. Our intention is to generate society that connects each individual to his or her creative powers, to participation in community, to the larger realm of civic life, and to the even greater world of nature that exists beyond society. From this devotion spring those duties that we owe to one another.
We will always burn the Man.

We might view Black Rock City as a great machine, efficiently providing the many hundreds of functions needed to help sustain us in a wilderness almost devoid of life. However, it seems more appropriate to consider it an organism, much more than simply a sum of its parts.
Our city is dynamic, adaptive and reactive.
The streets stream with people like arteries seen under a microscope.

It’s organic structure milling with the movement of information and materials, with organizing and building, nourishing and removing wastes, finally breaking down and disappearing.
Additionally, it references the mythological Phoenix in symbolically burning and being reborn from itself each year. The metaphor is enhanced by the general plan, where we speak of Center Camp as the heart of the city.
Getting ready for Burning Man is half the fun. Planning a camp, creating art projects, and getting funky gear together is a blast, as we all know. The more logistical side of preparing for the event can be just as creative, but there’s a lot of information to familiarize yourself with first.
By now you’ve probably gathered that this Burning Man thing isn’t as easy as it looks. So many things to bring, remember and purchase. How’s a body to cope with all this intense preparation? Never forget our Leave No Trace rule and its importance, it’s one of the things you should already be preparing for!
The people who make up Black Rock City are not simply “attendees,” but rather active participants in every sense of the word: they create the city, the interaction, the art, the performance and ultimately the experience that is Burning Man. Your participation is a gift given to the larger community for everyone’s benefit. The playa is a blank canvas upon which many a fantastic vision has been realized. All participants are welcome to create — or be — art at Burning Man.
