History#
Figueira da Foz International Film Festival

The first edition of this event was in 1972. For 3 decades it attracted cinephiles from all across the country and also overseas, being considered the most important Portuguese Film Festival, and featuring films from a wide variety of cinematographic genres, mainly some that were little known to the Portuguese commerce.
It came to be by the initiative of a group of cinephiles, in which stands out José Vieira Marques, who was, from the very beginning, its sole director. Born in Vila Franca de Xira on the Feb. 28th of ’34, José Vieira Marques, who’d first pursued a career as a priest, directed the FICFF up until 2002, year of its 31st and last edition, having moved to Setúbal in ’03.

This festival was mostly hosted by the movie theaters of Figueira’s Casino (Casino da Figueira da Foz), although some of the screenings expanded to other rooms in town, such as the Grupo Caras Direitas in Buarcos and the auditory of the Museum Dr. Santos Rocha.
